| Right click some of the drills... They'll say they're effective "for soft soil such as sand" or whatever. That means each drill attempt will use up 1 drill life on that type of soil, and 2 drill life on other types.
Some drills (such as I think Chaos drill) don't tell you what ground they're good on, and you just have to guess. In the cases of diamond, chaos, and gao, it doesn't really matter since they're the most easily available drills for their depths.
Myshop drills work well (1 drill life per use) on any ground as far as I know.
As for the time-saving idea, it just means that the less time you spend getting "Nothing found" when you reach the bottom of whatever ground you're drilling, the less time you waste. The 90 DA detection just tells you 100% of the time whether you have anything in the ground.
