Hi, I started playing TO a few months ago, and I've realized that there haven't been any in-depth lion guides since the revolution update. So I decided to write a guide of my own ^.^
First off I'm not gonna explain the basics of leveling and TM lvls and such. I'm pretty sure the beginner tutorial in-game covers that. Otherwise look for a beginner's guide. This will be a guide on most everything you'll need to know as a lion up to job change. After that you should have an idea of what you need to do. Also I'm gonna be outlining everything right from the beginning, so if you already know some of this stuff feel free to skip ahead. I'm not going to get real technical with the stat build and the skills, so look for another guide if you want information on that. Oh and if you're curious about me, I'm 17, live in FL and I had a lvl 57 4141 lion and am currently using a lvl 38 2143 lion, so I have a bit of an idea of whats going on.
Why Choose Lion
If you're looking at this guide, chances are you've already chosen to be a lion, but just in case here are the pros and cons to being a gunner lion:
Pros:
-high damage
-ranged attacks
-high mobility
-gunslinger awesomeness
Cons:
-awkward stat distribution; Charm/Sense important, AC in Power for damage
-lack of shield means less HP and DP
-relatively slow leveling in the beginning
-gunner skills are spread out a bit
Starting Up
So, first off I hope you've downloaded TO and have it fully patched and everything. If you have problems running it, then consult another guide for that..
After logging in choose a server and channel. From what I know you can't change servers, so I would pick Jewelia since it has two channels. But that's just me. After that you'll see the character selection screen. Hit the Create button to make your character. Select lion, of course, make a name, and then its time to choose your...
Stat Builds
Alright, this step is very important. This is gonna determine how your stats develop from now on. In the bottom right corner you should see this:
You can see each of the four main stats, Power, Magic, Sense and Charm. As a lion, you will automatically have a 4 in Sense, which cannot change. Magic types have a 4 in Magic, Power types have a 4 in Power and Charm types have a 4 in Charm. Each main stat has different attributes that come under that stat. I'm gonna gloss over the specifics of each attribute, Laggy's guide has a great section on them and how they apply to lions, so check it out if you're interested. Now, since the 4 in Sense cannot change, and knowing that lions are not concerned with Magic, there are four different builds to consider. (Why don't we care about Magic? Because of the three attributes of Magic, MA is totally useless, and MP and MD aren't worth sacrificing points in Charm or Power. Most monsters, especially at lower lvls don't cast attack spells. By the time you do fight monsters that have magic attacks, you'll have equips with MD to deal with them.)
Now the four builds are as follows:
4141 ~ First off, the good thing about this build is your AC growth will be very high, your damage output is gonna be big. Now onto the downsides. This build is pretty hard to pull off, and even if done correctly soloing anything will be a pain. Early game will be pretty easy, you'll hit decently on most monsters until you get a gun. Of course, those monsters are gonna be hitting you hard. Very hard. With a 1 in Charm, you'll have terrible HP growth, and your defense and dodging skill will be sadly lacking. Later on many monsters are going to one hit KO you, and will do so often. (Those Kooms are nasty...) Once you get a gun, this can be fixed with some kiting, but even so lions can't properly kite until TM lvl 40, so plan on some hard times until then. Spamming HP pots can stave off death, but this is expensive and if you lag, expect to die. Not recommended.
3142 ~ This build is based along the lines of the one above, going for high damage at the cost of defense. This one gives you a bit more defensive power, so you'll still be doing high damage and you'll have a chance to survive some of the nastier hits. If you were thinking about going 4141, this would be a better choice.
2143 ~ Ah, now this build is a good one. Decent Power, so early game won't be as bad, but you'll still be hitting very low until you get a gun. But with a 3 in Charm, your defense will be fine, and you'll have a good amount of HP. This is the build I recommend.
1144 ~ This is a very conservative build. You're throwing a 4 in Charm, so you'll be right below DP Cats on the defensive side. On the other hand, with a 1 in Power, early game will be tedious. If you plan on soloing all the time, (bad idea IMO), this could be your build, allowing you to solo bosses and mobs relatively safely, if not efficiently. Lots of PvP lions use this build, so if you like PvP this could be your build.
IMPORTANT - Whatever build you decide to use, every time you lvl put all your bonus points into AC. Do not put a few in DP or HP or anything. AC, all the time. Skill Build
All lions need the same basic skills. Below are descriptions of essential skills for lions, if a skill is not listed it is recommend you don't get it. As a reminder, Passive skills only need the initial points needed to learn it, you don't lvl those. On/Off skills are the ones you put points into.
Stone Shower - First skill Sense types learn. You throw a rock to hurt enemies. Simple, right? Actually, this skill is very useful at low lvls. It will out-damage Stone Strike for quite a while even. It doesn't take any skill points to learn, and I doubt it goes beyond lvl 1. But if it does, don't lvl it past lvl 1.
Stone Strike - This is the skill you'll be using until you get a gun. Get used to it. It's a simple melee strike, and it's not that powerful or accurate. But it's the only thing you have until you get a gun. Also it can be used even while wielding a gun, so you can use it to quickly finish off an enemy and save some ammo.
Gun Carrier - Allows you to use guns. Obviously important. You'll get it early, but don't expect to use guns effectively till quite a while later.
Invincible Reload - Very useful skill. Allows you to keep reloading while being hit. Important step in becoming a hit and run lion.
Gun Booster - Most important skill of all, at least until job change. Increases your attack power greatly for a period of time. Get it ASAP, and pump points into it CAREFULLY. Make sure the MP needed to cast isn't greater than the MP you have. Once mastered, this will tack on an extra 400 damage. You'll be out-damaging most mages with this. Getting Gun Booster is the start of the good times for lions.
Quick Reload - Great skill, allows you to reload while moving. You'll be surprised just how easier life is with this skill. It's kind of funny how it takes 40 TM lvls to learn a skill that lets a kiting character actually kite.
Armor Destructor - Not much of a skill in itself, but it is a prerequisite for another important skill, Lucky Seven. Armor Destructor decreases a monster's defense for a small period of time. You're probably going to want to hold off on getting this and Lucky Seven until you get Power Shot, a second job skill.
Lucky Seven - Pretty useful skill, it increases luck for a period of time, kind of like Gun Booster. Increased luck = less missing. By this time you'll probably be as annoyed as I was at all the missing. This will cut down on that. Good skill to have, but like I said before you should wait until you get Power Shot.
Power Shot - Your first attack skill with a gun, and a beastly one at that. Power Shot does big damage, and also you don't need to reload after using it, so you can fire a normal shot right after. Master this immediately.
The following is the skill build I've been following, generally most lions follow the same build. The important lion skills are spread apart, so lions don't have a lot of choice in choosing their skills.
Key: Skill Name - Skill Lvl Goal
Stone Throw - 1
Stone Strike - 5
Gun Carrier
Invincible Reload
Gun Booster - Mastered
Quick Reload
Power Shot - Mastered
Stone Strike - 10
Armor Destructor - 1
Lucky Seven - Mastered
You may think Stone Strike is a waste of TM points, but you're gonna need it at lvl 10 eventually to get Luck Seven, so you might as well put some points in it in the beginning to help with leveling.
Alternatively, if you really want Lucky Seven before Power Shot use this build:
Stone Throw - 1
Stone Strike - 5
Gun Carrier
Invincible Reload
Gun Booster - Mastered
Quick Reload
Stone Strike - 10
Armor Destructor - 1
Lucky Seven - Mastered
Power Shot - Mastered
Starting Out
Now that you have your character all set, you're ready to start. Once you begin you'll find yourself on a boat. Feel free to talk to the NPC's on board, the monkey gives you a Bad Check item that appears useless from what I've seen, but you could sell it for a few galders. Talk to the captain when you're ready to move on, and do the tutorial. You'll get some free equips, and some exp for doing it. Once you're on the island you'll be ready to start playing.
Level 1 - 15
Do all the quests at Coral Beach. The quests are pretty easy, so it shouldn't take too long. Avoid buying anything, not even a gun. Also those Wings of Returns are heavy, pretty useless and worth quite a bit of galders. So yeah, sell them. Once you're done with all the quests, you should be about lvl 12 or 13. Now you can do the Monster Quest at Coral Field 4. Bustshells aren't too hard, but the lvl cap for the quest is 14, so take advantage of it while you can.
Level 15 - 20
Do the quests at the Gate of Desert Beach, they're basic drilling quests, so if you find drilling boring...deal with it  Drilling is a big part of this game, so you're gonna be doing it a lot. Want a tip? This could be just a coincidence, but for me there's a little trick I use to make questing easier. First start the quest to see what you need and where to get it. Then quit the quest and start drilling/looting from monsters. I think the drop rate of the item you need goes up when the quest isn't active. Also you could make a list of all the quest items you're gonna need that you can find in a certain area. Then you'll know what's useful and what's not. Or you could simply loot everything in sight. You've got the WT for that, probably. Anyway once you finish the quests at Gate of Desert Beach, move onto Paradise. You can do Officer Robert's quests, the first one is a bit of a pain. The second one is easy and the third requires some digging. Also realize for the last one you don't have to actually refine the sword, you just need the Refine Guide allowing you to save it and the Bronze Gemstones. A few of the other quests can be started as well, but the mobs you have to kill are kinda high lvled for you now, plus without a gun it will be really hard. Quest and kill your way to TM lvl 20.
Level 20 - 25
Once you have Invincible Reload try and grab a cheap gun from someone, or buy the one in the store. You'll have a few more options for quests. Try out the Monster Quest in Paradise, also you can go back to Coral Field 4 and do Lifeguard Dean's quest and the Thiefmon Monster Quest. Also start digging around Desert Beach, there's a lot of items you're gonna need. At lvl 25 make sure you do Dorothy's quest. This will give you your best pet yet, and one you'll be using for quite a while, a Baby Lion. At the end of the Sandman's Quest you will receive a Weapon Ticket A. Use it to get the Precise Wooden Gun from Minty in the Paradise shop. This is a good gun that will last you for quite a while.
Level 25 - 30
You should be finishing any quests you have around Paradise. Also you can try Love Hunter Robin's TM quests at the Pyramid. These will be sorta tough until you get Gun Booster, which should be around lvl 32 or so. Soon you will be moving to Megalopolis.
Level 30 - 35
Now you can move onto Megalopolis. There's lots of people around here, so feel free to wander around and stare their expensive shops  The Event Garden is here too, so if there's an event going on, go ahead and try for it. The quest area for you right now is in the Southwest Forest, where Poppuri Dungeon is. If you're a 4141 lion like I was, you'll grow to hate this place. At least I did. Those Sppo's are annoying as hell... Anyway this place has a new set of quests for you to do. Note that many quests you'll do here give you Poppuri Beans. Save these to sell, the items you can exchange them for aren't that great, and beans can go for at least 10k each. Do the TM quest with Kokebi's, they're pretty easy to kill. Also note that the minimum depth in Poppuri Dungeon is 20. This means that the Basic Drill you've probably been using all this time is going to be kind of useless down here. Not entirely though. Since I'm very cheap, when I was down here all I used was Basic Drills. It took a while, but I finished the quests here. You could buy a drill at Megalopolis and use it, but they're pretty expensive considering they only have 100 life. If you do get one, and you don't like wasting it, then use this little trick. When you drill somewhere, one of three things happen. A "Nothing found" message appears and you move on, a light bulb appears and you're guaranteed to find an item, or you just drill normally and you may or may not find an item. Well you can click in a spot to drill, and then if you don't get a light bulb, you can right click and move on without wasting any drill life. This way you can make sure you'll get an item every time you drill. Also you can see that outside of Poppuri Dungeon there is a Card Girl. Her quests give a large amount of TM exp, so you'll want to complete them. In her quests she gives you a clue and you have to find the right monster card. The riddles aren't that hard, but for your convenience here are the three cards you'll need: Sppo Card, Forest Mantis Card, Koom Card.
Level 35 - 40
You should be finishing up any quests you have left at Poppuri Dungeon, make sure you complete any Monster Quests and TM quests you have left. The Forest Wasp quest is actually pretty hard, I didn't do it but if you can by all means take a
shot at it. (Got the pun, right? :woot:) Once you hit lvl 40 you'll get the opportunity to make a lot of money. The Lvl 40 Gift Box you receive goes for about 1,000,000 galders. That's right, a million. I don't know about you, but when jokingly put it for sale for 500k in a shop and it actually got sold, I was pretty surprised. I had about 600k at the time, so actually having a mil was a big deal to me. You can sell this for up to 2 mil from what I've heard, which will go a long way to making that 1,050,000 you'll need for job change. The item inside the Gift Box only makes you move faster for 3 days anyway from what I've found out, so you're not missing out on anything important anyway.
Level 40 - 50
You should have an idea of what you need to do by now. Most of the Caballa Relics quests are lvl 50 quests, but a few are lvl 45 so you can do those soon. They also added Episode 1 quests that you can start at lvl 45. Make sure you go complete them, at the end you get a Nono Ring, a great accessory that gives +8 AC, definitely worth the time. Job change is coming up, so make sure you'll have the money by lvl 50, TM lvl 40. Recently they took out all the hard-to-drill items you had to have for job change and replaced it with a Badge you'll need that you can get from Kaboom's. These guys are pretty tough, and they explode when near death which I'm sure you could have divined from the name. Considering how cool that Inventor suit is though, rest assured the effort is worth it.
Equipment
For lions, equipment can be very important. Lions can't use shields with guns, so DP is a problem for them. Physical helms are important for all lions, at least until job change. Pharaoh Hat is something to shoot for. This is a beauty, a mere lvl 35 requirement and a whopping +5 AC boost. Also has great DP and MD. It also has a hefty price tag to match. I bought one for 1 mil, and I considered it a good deal, most go for at least 1.3 mil. Weigh the awesomeness of this helm against how much you want job change, it's a tough call. For Inner Wears you'll be wearing a Life Jacket, maybe forever. Unless you can cough up 20 something mil for a Golden Mole Vest, you'll be wearing this. For accessories, find what you can. Items that increase AC, LK, DP or HP are all good. Make sure you have a good weight pouch too. For pets, use a Baby Lion until lvl 50. Then you'll have a few choices for pets. Chuck-f's are an okay choice, +4 AC but not much else. As far as I know you can complete a quest and get a Megalo UFO, which gives +4 AC, +4 LK and +300 HP. The best pet you could get would be an Ice Family which gives +4 AC, +5 LK, and MD, MP, DP, and good recovery rates. For guns just try and find good deals, early on guns that give some LK are better so you won't miss a lot. Once you find a decent gun you could compound it and refine it and so on. I don't have a lot of info on those, so you should consult another guide for those.
Suggested Equip List
This is a tentative list of equips that you can use. I'm starting at lvl 35, until then you might as well not buy an equip, they're not that great, use whatever you loot from mobs.
Level 35 - 50
Gun: Precise Wood Gun/Ultimate Wood Gun/Indiana Rifle
Hat: Pharaoh Helm/Iron Cap
Inner Wear: Life Jacket (or anything better you have)
Accessory: Acceptance Trunk/Pink Ice Ring/Mind Body Charm/Nono Ring
Pet: Baby Lion/Melon Biscuit/Chuck-f
Level 50 - 100
Gun: Ult Antique Gun/Ult Metal Gun/Mst Military Gun
Hat: Pharaoh Helm/Ult Basic Cap
Inner Wear: Life Jacket (or anything better you have)
Accessory: Nono Ring/Rhythm Earrings
Pet: Chuck-f/Megalo UFO/Fairy Angel Red
Also note that for compounding and refining purposes, you shouldn't do either until you get your high lvl equips, like the military gun, rhythm earrings etc. (Credit to Monkiemagic and riyokku for this section)
Guide to Kiting
If you've played an MMO before you probably know what kiting is, if not then you still probably know what it is, just maybe not the name for it. Kiting is simply a hit and run tactic, or in our case shoot and run. Lions are not meant to be tanks, nor should you for any reason. That's why we have nice, powerful,
ranged weapons. You can kite with any weapon really, even melee, but obviously guns are better suited for this. To kite just shoot a mob and then run away from it. Simple, yet effective. There are some things to remember though. When kiting remember to run away from the mob, but also try not to run into another mob and have two of them to worry about. Also, unless you have Quick Reload, don't run away and then come back into aggro range of the mob without reloading. Kiting is a necessary skill, and should become second nature. Plus, it's hard to keep up the badass gunslinger image if you're getting smacked around.
Final Notes
In closing, I'd like to thank Laggy for his great guide which helped me a ton when I was starting out. Also thanks to riyokku, monkiemagic and badna0 for their input. If you find anyplace where I've made a mistake or missed or something or was a total idiot, feel free to comment. Constructive criticism is nice, but flaming makes me angry
Thanks a lot, and have fun being a gunslinger, I'm out. :eyebrowcar:
